Abstract

The essay aims to analyse the Maghreb diaspora in Europe through a historical perspective. In the aftermath of the independence of Tunisia, Morocco and Algeria, a wave of migration towards European countries took place, resulting in the settlement of Muslim-majority communities. Within these communities, a dramatic dilemma soon emerged as a consequence of the clash between the conflicting concepts of the ‘Islamic Umma’, which unites people of Muslim faith, and of the ‘nation-state’ that tends to create identity divisions. In this framework, the second and third generations of Maghrebi origin, who are the result of profound changes in the international scenario (Gulf Wars, Twin Towers attack, Daesh), have struggled to redefine their identity.
