Resumen

This paper aims to define the dimension of Machadian cainism through the analysis of the Cuento and the Romance “La tierra de Alvargonzález”. Alvargonzález embodies the essence of the Spain of the Desastre; a Tierra-Heimat where the fleeting dream of happiness of the pater familias, the naïve man of the fields, vanishes with a heinous and useless parricide. The deep pain that causes the loss of innocence and the degradation of a Land where weeds and greed proliferate creates a deep bond between the phantasmatic body of the protagonist and that of the Sevillian poet that enable us to identify Alvargonzález as the lyric alter ego of Machado. Heroic past and Intrahistorico present coexist in a tale, in a Spain, that will soon try to thrive without hesitation to shed the blood of his brother. The post-war film reinterpretation of the Opera by Arturo Ruiz-Castillo highlights, despite the discounted happy end, how much on everyone and all looms sinister the shadow of the Nemesis.
