Abstract

The article examines the function of the deities of the Greco-Roman pantheon within Aby Warburg’s Mnemosyne Atlas, situating them within his conception of a montage of knowledge. The analysis focuses on Panel 36 of the Mnemosyne Atlas, devoted to the thirty-two miniatures of the manuscript Urb. Lat. 899, which documents the wedding celebrations of Costanzo Sforza and Camilla d’Aragona held in Pesaro in 1475. The chronicle of this festival records a crucial phase in the irruption of Antiquity into the early Italian Renaissance, in which mythological figures and astrological demons are presented, for the first time, «in their corporeal reality».
