Abstract

This article critically examines the origins of monotheism in the Hebrew Bible, challenging the notion of an original and consistent monotheism. From a historical-critical perspective, Israelite monotheism is understood as the outcome of a complex historical process shaped by ideological and redactional developments, especially in the post-exilic and Hellenistic periods. The Hebrew Bible is thus viewed not as a direct source for ancient religion, but as a rewriting of the past. The paper also critiques evolutionary and revelatory models, proposing instead to understand monotheism as a dynamic process and ideological construction.
