Abstract

The 1930s saw the completion of a process that had been underway since the first decade of the century, the flanking of the novelistic narrative by a hybrid genre, indeed the hybrid genre par excellence: the filmic narrative. One of the major consequences of this was a new and different hybridisation: that of novel and essay, with new masterpieces, which sometimes met with immediate and extraordinary success, such as James Hilton’s book from which the short essay is based, or the new genre of the endless book, such as La Rochelle’s masterpiece, Gilles. The cinematic transposition of literary works has served, in many cases, to reveal the profound ‘truth’ of literary masterpieces.
