Abstract

The purpose of this article is double: to trace the history of the concept of sustainable development and to shed light on the ongoing confusion surrounding its meaning. The first paragraph will examine the origins and development of environmental ethics, the philosophical discipline from which the idea of sustainable development arises. The second paragraph will focus on the evolution and establishment of this concept, aiming to clarify its original meaning. The third paragraph will analyze how sustainable development is commonly represented, emphasizing the technical and geoengineering reduction that have shaped this concept, while also highlighting the limits of the solutions proposed by climate engineering. Finally, the fourth paragraph will demonstrate how and why climate engineering has absorbed environmental education itself, thereby causing the general uncertainty that characterizes sustainable development today.
