Abstract italiano

Freedom means getting rid of stereotypes and norms, of what people consider socially correct but at the same time confines them to a cage, within well-defined boundaries. Therefore, to be truly free means breaking those boundaries and getting out of the cage. However, what really happens when someone dares to do that? Stella, the protagonist of Asylum, is attracted to a man who is mentally ill, a lunatic who has stepped beyond the limits of ‘normality’. By loving him, she feels totally free, at last. But there is a fine line between freedom and madness, and it is thinner than we can imagine.

Going back to Heidegger’s philosophy is not mere erudition; it is finding oneself immersed in the big issues of our time. A specific aspect of Heidegger’s philosophical research is analysed in this contribution – the Greek philosophers whom he called “auroral”: Anaximander, Heraclitus and Parmenides. Through them, we can go back to the great themes of a philosophy that continues to stimulate and even disturb today’s man’s conscience.

Abstract italiano

The present contribution aims to investigate, in an innovative way, some significant aspects of the last critical work of Foscolo set up in the final glimpse of the tormented English years: the philological commentary of the First Canticle of Dante’s Comedy. The text, which has long remained unpublished, was published by Giuseppe Mazzini for the types of Pietro Rolandi in 1842. The article, with a clear philological perspective, which emphasizes the textual reflections proposed by Foscolo, proposes to provide useful reflections on a work substantially forgotten by the critics, also in view of its desirable recovery in the approach of the VII centenary of Dante’s death.

Abstract italiano
English abstract
This paper stems from a question about the cognitive, psychological and affective-relational processes of people with visual impairments. The thesis argues that blind and partially-sighted people are not excluded from the world because of structural deficits, but they instead have a different way of perceiving and producing mental images related to the world. It is therefore necessary to exit the theoretical paradigm for which the person suffering from visual disability is incapable and therefore relegated to the margins of society, and instead consider how an active involvement in the process of knowledge and interaction with others can be made possible. This happens by considering the relationship dynamic with the world, which binds together syncretic perception, structural analysis and imaginative synthesis. Finally, we cannot ignore the existential tragedy that unites sighted and blind people, starting from the desire to be seen, meaning their hunger for consideration and recognition as unique and unrepeatable individuals, both from themselves and from one another.

Abstract italiano

The Greek tragedy is at the origin of all subsequent forms of theatre and such forms owe much of their success to it. For instance, in Eduardo De Filippo’s “Filumena Marturano” we find this matrix and we can compare the character of the Neapolitan ex-prostitute to that of princess Medea. They both devote their lives to a man who wishes to get rid of them to marry a younger woman. They will both struggle until the end to react to this abandonment. However, Medea will sacrifice her sons, conceding to the triumph of death, caos, and the irrational, while Filumena will succeed in giving a name and a family to her sons – bourgeois, that is – decreeing the triumph of life and order, the only one that could make her creatures feel welcome and not marginalised.

English abstract
Life and literature intertwine once again in this Lezione Sottintesa dedicated to Edith Wharton, and in particular to her novel “The Age of Innocence” and her autobiography “A Backward Glance”. Professor Antonini, almost unwillingly attracted by the American author, comes to understand the reason that had pushed him to include an American novel in his program of Italian literature only during the summer holidays. The relentless critical analysis of that respectable New York society of the late nineteenth century, clearly defined by the author, is matched by the thoughts of the protagonist on his own world, also very formal and often dominated by habits and behaviours that never seem to have to change: those who do not follow them are inevitably excluded. Antonini, through his reflections on the novel, will realise his differing nature, one for which form is only important when it is manifestation of substance, rejecting it altogether when reduced to mere formalism.

Abstract italiano

The piece is intended as a guide on how to interpret the food mentioned in The Betrothed. The food is analysed not only as a testimony to the eating habits of 16th-century Lombardy, but also as a vehicle for values like sharing and solidarity. The quotes from the novel are accompanied in a note by Fermo’s and Lucia’s corresponding parts.

Abstract italiano
English abstract
Following the success of “Black Swan”, director Darren Aronofsky broadens his horizons and aims higher with this controversial film. He builds an allegorical tale that consists of multiple stratified meanings: the relationship between feminine and masculine, between the artist and his muse, between the Creator and his creation. The Biblical mark is strong with the critique of established religions and the environmentalist message is passionate, worried about a Nature-Earth increasingly wilified by men.

Abstract italiano

This novel tells the story of an adventure and a journey. A family of poor farmers has to wade into a flooded river with a wagon onto which the coffin of their dead mother is resting, so as to carry her body, according to her will, to her hometown. The novel is divided into chapters and the title of each of them corresponds to the name of the character whose thought and point of view comes to life in the chapter itself, according to the techniques of the stream of consciousness and the interior monologue. This is one of the most beautiful novels by a great 20th- century American author: symbolic, realistic and at the same time highly imaginative, written with a captivating and polysemous style that literally bewitches the reader who sees his own life in the protagonists’ journey. Life, journey, Odyssey: the reference to Homer’s masterpiece is in the title. “As I lay dying” are the words that Agamemnon’s soul speaks, as he tells Odysseus of when, as he was laying dying, his wife Clytemnestra, who had murdered him, had not closed his eyes, showing no pity, no mercy towards him.

Abstract italiano
English abstract
The author, in this work, Pulitzer Prize 1998, paints a masterly picture of the American society caught between the aftermath of World War II and the Seventies, as he recounts the story of a young son of Jewish immigrants, Seymour Levov, better-known as the Swedish”, because of his imposing stature and fair hair, who grows up “strongly believing in the American dream only to see it crumble into pieces because of his beloved and rebellious daughter who grows up to be a terrorist. This is a novel about broken illusions and dreams turned into ashes, about innocence and its loss, about the ideals of honesty and solidarity that clash with the rigidity and unpredictability of reality. Moreover, this work represents the 1968’s generational clash between fathers and sons (and daughters).
