Dividual at Work: Deleuze in Cinema and Music
Abstract
The paper presents the notion of Dividual in Deleuze, considered as an entity which cannot be analysed in parts or composed with other entities without a qualitative change. Both the individual and the dividual are the result of processes of individuation, the object of which are, respectively, an integral unity and a partitive totality. Individuation is aimed to equip these entities of an identity, a space, a temporal coordinate and an affect. A comparison with Greimas points to a connection between enunciation and semiotics. Furthermore, the relations between the expression and the content plane in a semiotic system are dividual. In fact, the two planes are not independent, and their relation can be enunciated through a metasemiotics, of which they form the plane of immanence. Further research lines include a rethinking of western notion of substance in the perspective of the reversal of Platonism.
