Abstract

The proposed text outlines the specific nature of the inter-literary process that took place between the Slovak and Italian literary environments, especially in the period between the two world wars. This process was made possible by certain extraliterary circumstances, such as existential and social affinities, which played a significant role in shaping the interpretive attitude towards the works received. The background of literary communication in our case is based on the examination of the Romantic premise of an absolute inner human dimension, which was conceptualised perhaps for the first time in modern European literature by Giacomo Leopardi and also entered the inter-literary process in the form of so-called existential leopardisms. I will therefore mainly discuss the reception of Leopardi’s poetics, thought and selected poems, in the form of translations or reproductions, but also in the form of the dissemination of leopardisms as moral and aesthetic categories in the Slovak literary milieu of the first half of the 20th century.
