It is not possible to apply a methodological model that emerged in other contexts—entirely alien to the characteristics of the psychoanalytic field—with the illusion of resolving issues related to experimental control and of responding to criticisms concerning the objectivity of theoretical statements. Rather, as is also being observed in other disciplines, the path forward lies in an internal epistemology capable of accounting for the peculiar features of psychoanalysis. Only by bringing to light the prescriptive elements inherent in the empirical dimension specific to psychoanalysis is it possible to construct the objectivity proper to psychoanalytic theory (metapsychology).
