Abstract

The author presents some conclusions the Standard Epistemic Module (SEM) argument lets us draw about the relationship between technique and method in psychoanalysis.
The control of suggestion is conceived of as the characteristic element of psychoanalytic procedure by most authors, to the extent that it has often been appointed as its core. This centrality notwithstanding, however, it has hardly received adequate methodological treatment and sufficient consideration within any theory of psychoanalytic technique. The author aims to show how SEM sets out a change of standpoint, which focuses on the distinctive empirical method of psychoanalysis, and which allows to reconsider many issues of technique as secondary compared with the more general matter of empirical falsification of hypotheses in psychoanalysis. This slant seeks to engender an epistemology that is specific to psychoanalysis, whereby we can handle the problems around the phenomena and dynamics this discipline studies by a direct route.
