Abstract
Burrows, dens, recovery sites are briefly reviewed in Vertebrates, particularly Mammals. Ethologically, they host complex phenomena (early experience; imprinting; onset sensory-motor capabilities; steps of emotional and cognitive performances; etc.).
The area immediately surrounding the burrow is the critical scenario where offspring survival strategies are socially implemented.
The wider area around the burrow is marked/defended by conspecifics competing for trophic resources.
