Résumé

This essay explores the central role of aesthetic education in the philosophies of Friedrich Schiller and G.W.F. Hegel, emphasizing its significance for freedom, Bildung (self-cultivation), and modern democratic society. Starting from Schiller’s critique of Kant’s rigid separation between reason and sensibility, the text argues for a reconciliation of the human being’s “double nature” through aesthetic experience. Schiller’s concept of unity between rationality and sensuousness profoundly influenced Hegel’s early philosophical development, particularly his rejection of deontological moralism and abstract dualisms. The essay further examines the educational and political implications of aesthetic formation. For Hegel, Bildung constitutes the essential condition for a free and just society, while art functions as a medium through which freedom becomes sensibly recognizable. Aesthetic education is therefore not merely ornamental but foundational for the development of autonomous and ethically informed citizens. Drawing on Hegel’s philosophy of spirit and his lectures on aesthetics, the text presents art as a privileged sphere in which truth, freedom, and self-consciousness are reconciled in sensuous form. Finally, the essay highlights the emancipatory and pedagogical power of art. Artistic creation and reception enable individuals to experience themselves “at home” in the world and to overcome forms of alienation and unfreedom. Art thus becomes a crucial dimension of modern ethical life and democratic culture, mediating between sensibility and reason, individuality and universality, nature and spirit.
