Abstract
Landscape is interpreted in many ways; it defies any single definition. In its abstract form, it is a recent concept, yet its image is ancient, linked to the sense of wonder evoked by theorein. It is in this light that Ernesto Grassi’s search for the primordial in Philosophy and Landscape – a little-known text, virtually ignored by landscape scholars – should be re-examined. This work concludes the observations from his journey to South America in search of ahistorical nature, undertaken in the 1950s, and is rich in insights relevant not only to the essence of the matter but also to the way in which we approach it. These premises inspire the present paper.
