Abstract

In his lectures on the history of philosophy given in Leipzig in the 1950s, E. Bloch also addressed the dissolution of Hegelianism. This process featured Schopenhauer, Kierkegaard, and Nietzsche in what Bloch called the“line of catastrophe”, which emphasized pessimism but also the arational component of humanity and reality. Bloch drew inspiration from these philosophers for his critiques of Hegelian historicism. These critiques were evident as early as “The Spirit of Utopia”, in the seminal section dedicated to the philosophy of music history. Indeed, music was the art form that most clearly expressed the deepst core of existence and its incompleteness, further revealing its utopian dimension. Bloch thus confirms his originality in his reading of philosophical materials, which helped highlight the ethical component of practical rationality.
