Abstract

The aim of this paper is to specify one of the basic concepts of Adorno’s aesthetics, namely the concept of material and, in particular, the concept of literary material. Secondly, the intention is to identify the use of the concept of literary material as a possible current application of Adorno’s aesthetics. First, I will focus on the distinction between aesthetic material in general and literary material in particular; secondly, I will illustrate the concept of artistic form with reference to the material. In this way, the artistic form will be understood as the law governing a specific field of legality within which the aesthetic material is placed. Finally, following this definition, I will try to sketch an interpretation of the contemporary postmodern novel in the light of this way of understanding the concepts of material and form.
